Abstract
Description
The purpose of this report is to describe the preliminary results of the 2021 archaeological investigation at the Hell Gap site (48GO305) in southeast Wyoming. Ultimately, this report is one part of a larger, ongoing research project aimed at understanding the Hell Gap site and its place in the Paleoindian prehistory of the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain regions. This report begins with a brief discussion of site protocols and any recent protocol changes concerning the excavation, field laboratory, and total station. Next is a section on the structural anatomy of the Hell Gap site, focusing on stratigraphy and artifact orientation. Finally, the report will discuss the 2021 season’s finds: ochre, charcoal, heated bone and burned artifacts, chipped stone, faunal remains, and a comparison of the 1/4” screened matrix and mapped items. Appendices report on the Hell Gap site’s facility maintenance improvements during the 2020 and 2021 seasons, site visitation, public education, and experimentation with yucca cordage.
